VOIP services
The benefits of VOIP go far beyond free long distance calling and new services. Because VOIP integrates voice calling with the IP network, businesses of the future will only need one network to operate, rather than separate telephone and computer networks. A single integrated network is cheaper to install and maintain, and only one network service bill to pay.
What Is VOIP?
VOIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol (IP), which refers to sending telephone calls over data networks such as the Internet or private frame relay networks instead of the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN). What makes VOIP so exciting to telecommunications engineers, technology buffs and smart businesses is its potential for delivering new services that will combine voice and data, and its ability to offer some traditional telephone services, such as long-distance calling, without telephone company charges.
That potential comes from the efficiency of IP networks, which deliver information differently than the PSTN. When you make a telephone call on the PSTN network, you’re using a dedicated circuit. IP networks, on the other hand, transmit your call efficiently in separate small packets that get reassembled at the receiving end. And because the packets carrying voice calls are delivered over the same IP network as data, VOIP will allow users to streamline their network requirements.
What is IP Telephony?
VOIP is a subset of IP Telephony, which is defined as PBX functionality delivered by IP-based systems. IP telephony opens doors to cost savings on long distance and to a new world of services due to the convergence of voice and data networks. Auto-attendant, voice mail, least cost routing, and all of the things you expect on a traditional PBX are all offered on IP PBX systems.
Specialized IP telephones (or conventional analog phones), phone switches, and other devices bridge the gap between the IP network and your ear. To foster a unified platform for VOIP equipment from different manufacturers, the telecommunications industry has established standards such as MGCP and Session Integration Protocol (SIP).
Why is VOIP / IP Telephony good for business?
The most immediate benefit of VOIP for most businesses is savings on long distance charges. Companies equipped for VOIP can place long-distance calls between their sites over the Internet or a private WAN rather than the PSTN and avoid paying long distance charges. Since most companies already pay for broadband Internet connections, the only additional requirement is the equipment that connects telephones to the IP network.
In addition to the cost savings, bringing voice and data together on one network opens the door to new services. Advanced multi-media conferencing, advanced call center functionality, unified e-mail and voicemail messaging, and dialing calls using a computer contact list are just a few of the new service possibilities. Mobile or remote workers can use their computer as a “soft phone” and be a “virtual” extension as if they were physically present in the office.
- Flexibility: (reconfiguring systems, mobility).
- Ease of administering and configuring: intuitive point-and-click GUI’s.
- Cost savings (local and long distance, in-house moves, adds, & changes).
- Integration: an IP PBX can be phased in with your existing legacy PBX.
- Scalability: your system easily grows with your company.
- Uses your current data network and your IT staff support it.
OSDS will analyze you company’s VOIP/IP Telephony needs and recommend the solution that fits your company. Install, configure and support your VOIP system.
Bottom line benefits:
- Remote workers and road warriors stay accessible and connected.
- Save money on moves, adds and changes by maintaining your system internally.
- Adoption of valid reliable technologies, thereby enhancing your delivery of products and services to your clients.
- Reduce calling costs significantly- you can place long distance calls between your sites without long distance charges.
- Free up staff from maintaining a hard to maintain phone system.
- Lower the total cost of ownership for a phone system.
- Unify your data and voice networks for better collaboration and communications.
